Gigantic forces in the oceans — waves, currents, and tides — have often proved too costly or awkward to harness, compared to wind or solar power, until now. Starting in late November 2003, a tidal current has been turning the blades of a windmill-like turbine standing on the seabed near Kvalsund at the Arctic tip of Norway.
"We are the first in the world to use tidal currents to generate electricity to be fed into the local grid," said Harald Johansen.
Giant damming projects are out of fashion because they can damage the ecology of rivers and coastlines. Seabed turbines, by contrast, are silent and invisible, and fish can swim around them without getting sliced up.

The Hywire's fuel cell produces no exhaust, only water, and with all the electronics fit into the chassis and no engine in front of the driver, there is plenty of storage space."It holds the promise of eliminating the automobile from the environmental equation," Burns told reporters. He said GM hoped to start using some of the technology for marketable cars by 2010.
One might argue that GM is one of the monopolies that controls the car market that is not allowing in new technologies. I agree, so let's keep GM on track with this cool technology by letting them know the people want to buy their fuel cell car.

Plants Can Fix Bad GenesA team of scientists at Purdue University has discovered a mechanism in plants that allows them to correct defective genes from their parents by tapping into an ancestral data bank of healthy genetic material.
It has been learned that plants can travel back up the evolutionary path and tap into and use past genes to restore traits that would otherwise be lost.
"We think this demonstrates that there's this parallel path of inheritance that we've overlooked for 100 years, and that's pretty cool," said Robert Pruitt, a professor of plant pathology at Purdue University.
Molecular studies indicated that the plants harbored "memories" of versions of their genetic code going back at least four generations. Plants can somehow use these codes as templates to correct the spelling of mutated DNA. Just as plants can go back to their ancestors for blueprints to correct their mutations, I think of the opportunity of humans going back to their ancestors for cultural blueprints on how to get it right so we can live together and not annihilate ourselves is also there. Then to think that humans have the past encoded in their genes is a t the core of our humanity, past, present and future.
In a time when the Christian right has framed the evolution debate with the phrase, "Intelligent design or cosmic chance" we have scientists upending prevailing genetic theory, the core of evolutionary theory. I like the comparison between the two life kingdoms, plant and human, pulling wisdom from their ancestors. I do not, however, trust humanity manipulating nature with an intelligent design; genetically modifying organisms for profit is playing God, the core belief for any student of Lucifer.

France Unveils Air-powered Car
Sept 27, 2002, Paris, FranceEngineers in France believe they have come up with the answer that environmentalists and economists have spent years searching for: a commercially viable, 100% non-polluting car, which costs next to nothing to run.
Version 2 is said to be more quiet than version 1 with a top speed of 110 km/h (65 mph), and a range of around 200 km before you need to fill the tanks up with air.
The car comes fitted with its own compressor so you can fill up at home. But that would take four hours. The company has developed the technology to refill the vehicle in three minutes, although there are no service station forecourts with the compressed air machines to do that yet.
And the cost? Cyril Negre, the head of Research and Development at MDI cars, reckons a full tank of air would be about 1.50 euros. And for that you can drive knowing that you are pumping nothing harmful into the atmosphere.
